15 Card Romany Spread - The Magician

The Magician

The Magician might be regarded as twin brother to the Fool, the other half of a dynamic equation that requires both to be present before either makes sense.

The Fool's glory is that he knows nothing and therefore has perfect faith. The Magician's is that he knows all he needs to know. In many decks he stands with one hand raised, pointing to Heaven, the other pointing down to Earth. He acts as mediator between the two, knowing both. In some older decks such as the Marseilles he appears as a juggler, a natural counterpoint to the clown.

In ancient times many different skills were regarded as sacred mysteries. Smiths, carpenters and craftsmen of all kinds formed Guilds or Companies to preserve their secrets. Today, the Freemasons are a surviving relic of that time. To be a "magician" then was a matter of doing something so well that it became a sacred art.

His astrological attribution is Mercury, the planet of knowledge and communication.

The Aces
As I said earlier in this lesson, the Aces represent the purest and therefore the strongest energy of their suit. We might see in this the strength of "purity of intent", where purity refers not to morality but to singleminded attention on a goal.
