The first three chapters from 'Tarot for Life'

Your First Spread

The spread shown is about the simplest short of a "one carder" but is surprisingly versatile and useful. To use it, simply shuffle the cards and lay out three from the top of the deck in the order shown. It can be used to look at a particularly important event in the future, a particular period of time or a particular question. It can be used as a basis for freeform extensions if a question turns out to be more complex than anticipated.

Once you have laid out the cards, take a moment to absorb impressions from them. Feel what the images are trying to tell you. Is their message one of hope or caution? If there are court cards, representing people, do they look friendly, unfriendly or neutral?

Feel free to link cards to any known information about the issue. For example, if you are reading for the next day's events and you know you are likely to have an important discussion with your boss, it is not "cheating" to recognise that as the significance of the Emperor.

When you have extracted all you can from the cards directly, then you can look at "book meanings" if you wish. If you find the two in conflict, though, prefer your own instincts. The only one who has the last word on your relationship to the cards is you.
