Grounding and Shielding
This exercise is recommended for
use before a reading or series of readings.
Its purpose is to create a state in which you
are open to receive information psychically but
closed to the energy-draining effect which can
take place when you open up to a person in need.
Remember, we are all capable of being "psychic vampires",
especially when upset or anxious, and it is
not usually deliberate. If you want to give energy
to someone, do it deliberately. Energy given
freely is far more useful to them and less of
a drain on you.
Remember also that the link goes two ways. You may want or need to do a reading when you feel emotionally or physically drained or even in crisis. Taking energy from a client, or passing on negative energy to them, is more than just discourteous. It could completely undermine the purpose of the reading.
The exercise can also be used as a daily or twice-daily exercise for calmness, groundedness and protection. Since it is self-balancing, you cannot "overdose" on it.
The system of colours used here works on the chakras, or energy centres, located at various points along the centre of the spine. Various colour schemes and formats exist for working on the chakras. This is not "the one true way"; it is simply the method I find most helpful for the purposes given above.
